Solos are Based on Scales

(This post is part of an ongoing series about the importance of learning scales, which started with this post here: Why You Should Learn Your Scales)

This is an E minor scale on the guitar:

This is also an E minor scale:

This is "Rusted From the Rain" by Canadian rock stars Billy Talent:

Listen to that awesome guitar solo (at about 2:25). Guess what?

It is entirely based on those two E minor scales. Yes. Scales are awesome. You need to know scales to really rock like that. (Those of you looking how to play the song itself can google it, or better yet, get me to teach it to you!)

Virtually every solo you hear is based on scales. Yes, you can play guitar solos without knowing scales. You can even write guitar solos without knowing scales. But chances are, if you write or play anything that sounds good, it's going to be based on a scale.

Learn your scales. Then you can rock! (Or play jazz, country, whatever other style - their solos are all based on scales, too!)
