Notes on the Bass Fretboard

These are the notes of the bass fretboard, from the open strings (labeled "fret 0") all the way to the 12th fret. At the 12th fret, the note names repeat themselves, which is why I didn't include any frets higher than that. The 'E' string is the one closest to your head, the 'G' string the one closest to your feet.

Why learn the bass fretboard

As a bassist, unless your only interest is playing other people's songs, you will need to understand how to accompany others. For this you'll need to know some theory, including scales, and the names of the notes on the fretboard.

How to learn the notes of the fretboards

Scales are probably the easiest way to start learning notes on the fretboard. Here's a sample bass scale to get you started:

Simply name the notes (CDEFGABC) as you play them, and you'll start to learn the names of the notes on the fretboard.
